The Art of Peaceful Games: Preparing for the Pentathlon

from $50.00

Join us on Saturday, November 15, from 9 am to 3 pm, as we train and prepare for the Pentathlon.

Workshop Overview

The Pentathlon is a hallmark of Waldorf education, typically held in fifth grade to celebrate a child’s transition from childhood into early adolescence. Inspired by the ideals of ancient Greece, the festival centers on five events: running, long jump, javelin, discus, and wrestling, practiced not as competition but as an expression of grace, beauty, and balance. The Pentathlon honors the striving for excellence within oneself, the harmony of body and spirit, and the joy of peaceful games among peers. It is a living experience of both athleticism and reverence, cultivating inner strength and outer poise.

Led by Whitney MacDonald

Whitney has been a Waldorf educator for over twenty-five years. He has carried a class from first through eighth grade, served as a movement and physical education teacher, and held leadership roles supporting community, health, and social inclusion. With training in Spacial Dynamics, Simplicity Parenting, and conflict resolution, Whitney has also mentored teachers and led workshops around the world. He lives in North Carolina with his wife, Amy, and their dog, Mabel.

  • Overview of the Pentathlon’s purpose and history

  • Guidance on event organization and preparation

  • Movement exercises and demonstrations

  • Discussion of the archetypes and inner qualities cultivated through the Pentathlon
